Dental issues and diseases have existed since, well, the existence of teeth. Although dental practices and procedures were much different in prehistoric times, the need for more comfortable and pain-free dentistry has always been relevant. Although we might assume that our ancestors were tough and resilient, it’s safe to assume that they were just as nervous about dental treatments as us. Sedation dentistry has been around for thousands of years and helps dentists perform simple to complex procedures with little fuss and virtually zero discomforts.
Our Philosophy for Safe Sedation Dentistry
Dr. Kruti Sanghavi, our pediatric dentist in Hillsborough, NJ, and surrounding areas, has completed over 1000 successful cases of nitrous oxide sedation and over 50 operating room cases (and counting). At a sedation dentistry consultation, she takes the time to answer any questions you may have about its risks, benefits, and alternatives to the array of sleep dentistry services she offers.
Whether you undergo sedation dentistry at our Flemington, NJ, dental office or Capital Health Hospital, Dr. Sanghavi is committed to providing your child with specialized care and continuously monitoring them.
Our Approach to Sedation Dentistry
What is sedation dentistry, and are there different types of dental sedation? Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. At Floss Boss, we offer conscious and iv sedation:
Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide sedation or “laughing gas” is a mild and safe procedure in pediatric dentistry. It effectively manages mild to moderate anxiety, helps reduce untoward movement, and has slight numbing properties that help children feel at ease during the dental procedure. Laughing gas is mild, safe for kids, and has minimal side effects. Plus, it can be administered very quickly, and the effects of the gas wear off immediately once the administrative mask is removed.
Our Laughing Gas Dentist might recommend nitrous oxide to help:
- Relieve anxiety during the procedure
- Offer minimal pain control for minor procedures
- Keep the patient calm and relaxed
IV Sedation Dentistry & Hospital Dentistry
One of the most significant benefits of hospital dentistry is that it can be completed in one visit with the aid of a complete dental and medical team. Similarly, IV sedation helps complete the pediatric dental procedure in one visit but is generally done in a private office. We have an anesthesiologist who will come to the office and help with the sedation aspect, while our dentists and assistants will safely perform all the dental work.
When is IV sedation or hospital dentistry recommended? IV sedation or hospital dentistry aims to provide safe, high-quality, and efficient treatment in a comfortable environment. There may be several cases when our dental team may recommend IV sedation or hospital dentistry, including but not limited to:
- Children with medical or behavioral diagnoses where it is not safe to treat, and the child’s pediatrician may request it
- Severe dental caries where treatment visits and invasiveness of the dental work may traumatize the child
- Severe dental anxiety or phobia
