Does your child have noticeable white spots on their teeth? Are they embarrassed to smile because of discoloration? They may have white spot lesions (WSL) due to Fluorosis, loss of enamel, medication, or congenital defects. Previously, white spots were thought to be untreatable, so veneers and bonds are used to cover them up in adulthood.
However, Icon Treatment has proven successful in removing WSLs. Plus, treatments last longer than traditional whitening, and it’s completely painless and non-invasive. At Floss Boss Pediatric Dentistry, we can help your child regain their confidence by removing white spots in as little as one, easy treatment.
How Does Icon Treatment Work?
WSLs are opaque, white spots that contrast with your child’s natural tooth color. They appear whiter because of the way light reflects off of the demineralized surface of the tooth. So, rather than appearing discolored because of stains, the color difference is due to holes in the tooth’s protective layer.
Icon Treatment aims to even out this enamel-deficient area with resin infiltration. Here’s an overview of what that process might look like:
- Our dentist may use micro abrasion to help the solution seep into the tooth better.
- Then, they will etch the tooth with a light acid. Roughening the surface of the tooth allows the resin to create a stronger, longer-lasting bond.
- Next, they will apply thin, even layers of the resin treatment and cure it with UV light. We may repeat this process several times.
- After everything has been cured, we may polish the tooth to make sure it’s even and uniform.
This process is so painless for healthy teeth and gums, that your child won’t even need a local anesthetic.
Does Icon Treatment Protect Teeth From Decay?
Amazingly, Icon Treatment is great for more than just cosmetic purposes. As white spots are most often due to loss of enamel, teeth with this defect are at a greater risk of decay and injury. Treating the lesions with Icon adds another layer of protection for the tooth that can keep it healthy and beautiful for longer.
The only possible bad news among all of this great news–Icon treatment only works for the early stages of decay. It doesn’t work like a filling does to restore a tooth with significant damage; however, for surface-level defects, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Does Icon Treatment Damage Teeth?
Worried parents can breathe a sigh of relief because Icon Treatment is completely safe and non-damaging to your child’s natural tooth. Because it’s non-invasive, it has no permanent negative effects. It does, however, provide long-lasting protection that can save teeth from drilling, cavities, fillings, and dental crowns.
